Find more then mid and dark tone by adding the highlightzone. Next time work to get the head angle right.

Draw it on a single layer next time, also perhaps add another level or two of value. I think you are going to a strong stylized portrait. Try drawing him just as is (all levels of value) as a study, then do a stylized version that only emphasizes the main chunks of value you are wanting.
