The thing with gesture drawing is to get a sense for how to build things quickly, and get how to construct something like a person in very simple shapes, and to get down what matters. When you later do stuidies and longer drawings it will help you to first build with the underlying skeleton.

Its like bulding a house! you gotta learn how to make the floor before you put on the walls and then the roof.

If you do gesture drawing everyday for 30 minutes, and take care to notice how to capture certain things quickly, you will become better at drawing : )

ITs also good for capturing movement and spirit in a pose : ) but others are way better at explaining this than I am ^^

If I'm bad at explaining there are other things than books that can explain, there are videos I can link you, here:

I hope this helps : )

If you don't feel it, it might also mean that you don't need it (yet). Don't push yourself to hard, draw for fun, draw what you like. Climb step by step and master what you learned. New steps will reveal as required :)

pandaladie explains it very well. I'll put up those links in the gesture thread in the tutorial section as well.
