Challenging pieces are the ones we grow the most from I think. Whenever Im feeling frustrated with what Im working on I take comfort knowing that Im getting more out of it than the ones that came easy. Think of them as growing pains. Are you doing these from photos of other paintings or photos of people?

Totally agree with you :)
i've been doing www.wattsatelier.com online course for a month. these are from the references that are used in tutorials. but when I start painting I don't look at the tutors painting anymore, I just use photo reference that is provided.
