Stuff to Listen to
#1
Hey everyone, thought I would start a thread for links to stuff we can listen to while we work, like audiobooks, documentaries, interviews, etc. We already have one of these threads for music, so only talking-type stuff please. (Preferably something you wouldn't need to watch or keep your eyes on)

Alan Watts held many lectures during the later years of his life in which he spoke about eastern philosophy (particularly schools along the lines of taoism, zen and vedanta) and general philosophical subjects. He often discussed stuff such as self-identity, living in the present and humanity's relationship to the natural world. He's one of my heroes and I recommend anyone take a listen to some of his stuff when they work, I often listen to his lectures when I paint.

Here's some recommended listening:

Cool stuff. I personally listen to a lot of art podcasts and stuff of the sort:

Peter Mohrbacher's channel:

https://www.youtube.com/user/Bugmeyer/videos - Interviews and stuff about the industry, mainly focused on illustration.

Level Up:

https://www.youtube.com/user/levelupsessions/videos - Pretty known, but still worth mentioning, awesome interviews and demos if you feel like watching, but it's mainly the interviews.

Shaddy Safadi's Demo:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8XmF5W...R5FwH8b8yg - This, effectively is a demo, but if you wanna laugh with his great commenting skills it's perfect to run on the background.

Noah Bradley's Art Chats:

https://www.youtube.com/user/noahbradley/videos - artist talking about stuff , not the best , but certainly good enough to have on the background while studying.

Stephen Silver:

https://www.youtube.com/user/silvertoons/videos - motivational talk, pretty nice.

Swatches:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiU1-5V...C4A/videos - not my cup of tea, but it's ok when yout run out of videos in the other channels xD

Istebrak:

https://www.youtube.com/user/Istebrak/videos - This one is mostly demos, but it's ok for having pon the background to remind you stuff you might forget about while working.

Jetty Jet Show:

https://www.youtube.com/user/TheJettyJetShow/videos - the streams are pretty entertaining to listen to while working.

Seage Speaks:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnZALP6...HIvdCe7e2A - Motivational and stuff

Xap Tiara:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkuerBk...YzTENy4PXw Tutorials and stuff, not specifically for background, but it's ok, and there are some nice tutorials in there.

There's more stuff but this is what comes to mind mainly regarding art stuffs. There's also bbc documentaries and shit as you all know.

Miles Johnston has a great interview artcast on youtube, check it out
https://www.youtube.com/user/Milesjart/videos
It is a bit unusual regarding it's duration and a more "philosofical" content, but it's fun and very informative :)

I actually don't listen to art-related stuff while working even though I probably should, to avoid isolating myself in knowledge and news related to the professional illustrator field, which is already near vacuum. Here are some of the things I would listen to in the background that aren't a specific audio book. Audiobooks are a great way to "read more" while doing work, and there are many, many ways to find many, many of them for free - YT, t***ent, local library, google search 'free audiobook', librivox...

Permanent:

TED Talks. For inspiration, for news, for getting different angles on a topic from minds better than my own.

StarTalk radio, by Neil Degrasse Tyson. For those interested in space-related topics.

The Moth. Personal stories told to live audience.

Chris Oatley's podcasts.

The Collective Podcast. Series of interviews of artists

Creative Trek Podcast. Series of interviews of artists

National Public Radio. News and discussions on topics. Not sure if US only or can be listened to internationally. I usually just listens to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me program for the humor, which ever headline interests me on the splash page, and All Things Considered program.

May-or-may-not-be-there-tomorrow YT play list:

Nature History documentary playlist (this you might be tempted to look at for the animal or landscape visual, so be aware) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ablW3VBh...Hq5z9K67Rk

FBI Criminal Pursuit (bad resolution and repeated, recreated "crime scene" not worth looking at so great for listening only) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc8mLcvm...G&index=14

Mixed Art Documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXOPBZFv...Tec4LgM1NU

Focus.

Gonna add a quick two here.

Librivox audio books. Over 15000 public domain audiobooks. Narrated by volunteers. Some are horrendous readings, but many aren't.

Oh why did I only discover this thread now?! I think it will give me endless inspiration to what to listen to during those solitary hours spent in front of the screen.

And because I don't only want to take and give something back, I'm leaving this link here:
http://fourhourworkweek.com/2015/05/15/rick-rubin/

A friend sent it to me and it was a really interesting interview. There are a lot more podcasts for this show, but I only have listened to 2-3 so far. (They were very interesting, but not really art related)

That is lovely Adam. His talks about the Kek overlords and how to avoid them have really helped me through some hard stuff. I strongly urge for everyone to listen to every word this man says.

I like listening to light-hearted stuff when I work and more serious things for when I commute. Most of my ~serious podcasts have already been posted, so here are some things to lighten your workloads:

I Don't Even Own a Television
http://www.idontevenownatelevision.com/
-- A podcast about bad books! These guys are hilarious and thoughtful, and never cruel or offensive. They don't pick apart indie authors or go for low-hanging fruit. Personal recommendations are Doom: Knee Deep in the Dead and the Wild Animus episodes.

The Mystery Show
https://gimletmedia.com/show/mystery-show/
-- The season is over and I'm very sad, but the first few episodes are amazing. The host solves real-life mysteries, talks to people-- it's kind of hard to describe, but the humor is very positive and you walk away from each episode feeling better about the world.

Knifepoint Horror
http://knifepointhorror.libsyn.com/
-- Okay, I lied. I like good horror, too, and this is some quality storytelling. Very well written and narrated and very fun. I feel inspired after every story. It's also on indefinite hiatus :(

We Hate Movies
http://www.whmpodcast.com/
-- See #1, but for movies! Actually, these guys don't really hate movies, but they talk about movies really well.
