Hello there! :D

I really like your hand studies and i'd probably add some shadows there too to study value. And since you said you want to learn how to draw from your imagination, maybe it'll be good to, from time to time, just draw without references and let your mind do it's work. :D Just draw random stuff, characters, landscapes whatever makes you happy. Whit this you'll see what are you capable of and what is maybe your down side. Ofc, I'm just talking from my experiance and if you think this is stupid you really don't have to do this. xD

Anyway, hope you'll have a good time here. :D

@ stonedpanda03:  thanks, yes, thats what i am doing. mixing in some drawings from imagination and they always suck. But i work on it.


I did 100 faces from imagination. Because they sucked too much i mixed in some studies of references and looked how other people and different styles draw faces.

Hey man! Looks like you're working hard and studying a lot of useful things. I didn't watch them all the way through but those videos where you analyse and explain your studies are really useful for yourself, since explaining something to others helps us to know it really well (if I do something new in drawing, sometimes I talk in my head like I am explaining it to a 10 year old in order to help me to learn it fully).

Great that you are learning the skull, you can take it up a level too and try to learn all the little important bits and pieces and how they affect the face (e.g. small inner eye plane between the nasal bone and eye socket, and the angular curves of the brow). Those little pieces will help really sell your heads - Glen Vilppu has a great video series about it that really helped me no end.

Also, a lot of your drawings look skewed to the right - look at how you hold your own head when you draw. Does it lean slightly to the right while you draw? That can make the drawing skewed.

Hey Markus, thanks for dropping by my sketchbook :)

You were asking for advice and so obviously it would be more appropriate to post in your sketchbook. I'll try to keep it brief and to the point. I know you asked about color but as you'll learn, drawing and painting are very closely related.

Especially for beginners one of the big things you want to work on is using your entire arm/elbow when drawing. So I wouldn't jump unto using tablets yet. Just stick with a sketchbook. Think about trying to capture the shape of the object that you're drawing in the fewest amount of lines. Draw and examine from life. Even if you aren't drawing, just always try to be aware and pay attention to the world around you.

Get used to squinting a lot and just simplify things into major forms. Try to avoid the whole tiny scratchy lines thing. Part of it is a confidence thing, as you draw more, your lines will less scratchy and more bold, but there's nothing to say you can't try it now. I would take a look some of Michael Hampton's gesture drawings to get a sense of what I'm talking about.

Secondly, and this will help when you jump into light/color, is developing a sense of form. You're doing it a bit with the skull/head constructions but take it further and apply it to everything. Draw a lot boxes/cylinders/etc floating in 3d space. This means having at least a very basic understanding of perspective (1 and 2 point perspective). Don't just try to draw by eyeballing things, but try to understand the underlying forms that make up that object. Studying guys like Loomis and Bridgeman are great for this.

That's probably enough for now, when I have some time I'll post up some resources/videos you can check out.

Really? I cant see that and have never heard it before. Maybe I can see it when you give me an example. I dont think I hold my head to the right. Thanks for your tipps, I will check my drawings in the future if I made them skewed to one side.

I already have Loomis Books, I have to work through them, too. Takes time..

But... I kind of have the feeling you didnt answer my question how to pick the right colors.
I dont think I have trouble with forms.

Look at your drawings in a mirror, or flip them in photoshop and you should be able to see the skewing (it's mainly the faces you did a little way up).

Really nice last 2 drawings in here. :D I really like how you try to draw everything from all sides which is a great practice. ^^ Just as JyonnyNovice said up there take mirror or do something to see that sometimes your faces are slightly going in one direction. I make that mistake a lot and i need to rotate my image few times to see if i did it right. And also it's really nice that you can work as concept artist. :D gz ;)
