Crimson Character of the Week #20
»THE BARD«

“Though people usually see them in tavern, the bards spend lots of time traveling around, collecting lost music, interpreting ancient books and learn new songs and tales. They rely on their own intuition and inspiration, rather than traditional rules.”

(Not limited to humanoid characters. Be creative and have fun!)

The best of the CHOWs will be picked by an anonymous poll in the Finals thread and the winner is given the opportunity to pick the theme of the next CHOW's design, as well as becoming the title banner for that week! So go hard, design something interesting and unique!

Guidelines:
  • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work. (See next rule for exception)
  • 3D is permitted and renders MAY be used as whole or in part of a painting, as long as YOU created the work. Pre-made and/or purchased, online, assets are forbidden.
  • There is no restriction on the character's gender, time period or culture.
  • Studies are recommended, but not required.
  • There is no restriction on image formats (horizontal, vertical, square).
  • Environment backgrounds are optional.
  • Keep in mind you are not required to stick to what is in the passage. It is more of a guide in terms of mood.

Rules:
  • You must post at least one WIP in the WIP thread to be accepted into the final poll.
  • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline.
  • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible (minimum from the knees up).
  • Only ONE character.
  • Only ONE submission per person in the finals thread.
  • No fanart. We want to see your original, unique interpretations!
  • Voting will be held for 5 days after the deadline.
  • In an event of a tiebreaker, a winner will be chosen through a randomized name picker.

Deadline is Friday, March 10th @ UTC: 00:00

This CHoW inspired me to make one of my characters for Artstation challenge a bard. Here's the first sketch :) Crits highly appreciated, I guess not everything from the description reads in the sketch

Just brainstorming for now.

@neo
I think it's a solid design idea, but it needs better shape language. The bards coat is too simple and should be designed a bit more. The skull on a chain is a cool idea, but it seems way too big and unwieldly, and the same goes for the spikes on the lute. Neat idea, but the proportions are awkward

Yas! New chow

I am working on a Pirate Bard (hm, hope it's ok.. )
Here is a work in progress. I am going for a vignette look. Also trying for storytelling since I think it's one of my weakest things on my personal illustrations

Sweet brief. I was having a hard time thinking what to for my portfolio, so I decided to join chow and try to see if I can spin something out of this experience.

If you are reading this, I most likely just gave you a crappy crit! What I'm basically trying to say is, don't give up!

neopatogen - I googled morin huur. The head stock has room for a bad ass design. As of now, the design you got for that is pretty basic, you can probably capitalize on that little element. I'd like to see how the design works from instrument to amplifier as well.

I'm referencing from your initial post, so you might already be ahead of the game by now in terms of those.

Nice! I'm excited to see what people come up with for this.

I'm going with a roguish swashbuckling bard. Gonna try to put a more "Rockstar" spin on him while still keeping him grounded in fantasy / antiquity.

Some exploration sketches. This phase is always the most fun one, but at the same time it's so hard to pick which way you want to go. I know that I want an anthropomorphic character,  and in this case a fox.  I'm really trying to get to see if I can give my characters some personality, since my designs usually tend be pretty bland. I think I want to try and my a female sketch as well and see where that gets me.

Working on my CHOW.

My story is that this woman is a traveling vagabond who makes a living as a bard. She has visited a bunch of countries, so she has some mementos (such as jewelry, clothes etc) from diffirent countries and cultures. Right now she is trying to learn a new song from a book.

Having a lot of fun with this one and loving all the WIPs that have been posted. I'm currently figuring out the lighting and values for the scene. I decided to make my bard an "escort" of animal spirits.  Her hymns can also be used to induce a merciful "sleep" for creatures (and maybe human-alike?) that are in the process of dying.

Ugh meant to get started on this a week ago.  Going to do something along these lines probably...  is there some connection between foxes and bards?  Starting to become a bit of a theme.

I like the design of those red and black boots, Zorrentos.

A WIP Sketch, just in case I don't make the deadline. Started last week, had to scrape off a few sections where I got glue on it from something else.

Another WIP, hoping I can make it before time's up. I'm trying to work on it in my breaks in school.
I think my character lost his expression so I'll have to get that back!
Good luck to you all :D

There's some pretty nice variety in the types of designs we've come up wtih for this CHOW. Very cool to see.

Here's my current creepy bard design. May scrap it and start over if I have time tomorrow.
