Hello Fedodika, good to see you still grinding my friend.
The Winona Ryder piece came out especially good - great work dude.
I like your line drawing of the group in this last post. There's a some good narrative going on there. Three of them are engaged with the floating sphere whilst the girl at the front looks bored out of her brain!
Just be careful with your perspective. You've drawn some lines in the background on the left there that indicate the horizon line to be at nipple height of the girl standing up in the back. However studying the relative heights of the heads in the piece would indicate that the horizon line is around her head height. Not sure which you intended? Probably head height I'd guess?
Anyway, keep on trucking fella.

Let me know yay or nay on the bar in the background
Im studying a ton of mech stuff ill post it up tomorrow from a cool book i got on amazon. I had this idea to do some characters for different divisions, like infantry, airforce, heavy tanks/trucks, and mecha, and like special op, or administration/command. could be something to keep my mind occupied with coming up with concepts.
i know i have a brilliant new idea every day it seems but thats just how i operate i guess, dont count on me to finish every little thing i set out to do.
Met a cool lady named marji bordner in town today, she was an animator in squidbillies and is even in the extra in the unkown hinson thing, getting hugged up on by him. Was fun to meet someone in the industry, she said some nice things about my stuff and said skill isnt a thing holding me back at this point, which made me happy, but it aint solvin the tumbleweeds in the email problem lol
s'all bout gettin that folio goin baby fedo POWAAAAAAAAR
some mech madness :D been tryin all kindsa pens on these, most are copies from darren quachs ink book. the digital ones are from imagination. going through a catalogue of someones sketch work you pick up on all the patterns and go to tricks they use, its fantastic for visual library development
Darkiste: all the paper ones are studies from darren quachs ink book
Alright, burned through that quickly lol; i wanna do a nice mech design as a portfolio piece, did a practice one today, some quick sketches then spent an hour or so rendering this last post up a bit. preferably its gonna be like the mechs in front mission 4, 2 legs, kinda cross between gundam and modern military/near future kinda boring pragmatic war bots if that could ever exist.
this has been super fun, despite the grind, as theres lots of room to make mistakes and miss proportions in mechs so its easy to draw a ton and absorb a lot of info quickly. i think if i decide on a good design, ill use sketchup as kemp remillard does in his tutorial i got on gumroad a while back does. definitely want to nail that perspective over anything else, then paint the crap out of it with photo textures over a tight line drawing
Nice updates, really enjoy your mech designs, there's a lot of unique pieces there and are overall solid! Don't have much too offer in terms of critique as I'm not experienced much with mech design. Keep it up!
im enjoying painting this alot so far, id appreciate any writeups on the perspective im still figuring it out but any redline/pointers would be much appreciate if something is looking wrong
painting is great you should push it further. Some things that are bothering me is that I can't really tell if the leg that's further from us is lifted or stepping on the ground and I think you should trace over the photos with a brush to make it less obvious. I like how the mech is taking up so much space it's a nice composition
this part feels a little weird to me, robot bits a yellowish and everything behind is also the same and it's messing with my head.
maybe using the more cold / purple color you have in the bg would help even tho it wouldn't make as much sense lighting wise. Just some food for thought
mech is super awesome the only issue id have is that for mech designs if the details have wonky perspective it breaks up the big forms but the big forms are alot better.
bg also kinda feels like and afterthought not saying that is bad just saying that it feels that youre trying to hide a lack of understanding.
i dont mind the use of photos for details but i think it conflicts with the painterly approach, id say keep at it, you can always take it to the finnish line and assess then, its still gonna serve as a benchmark and a fine portfolio piece
edit: checked with perspective and the part with the most issues is the torso, even the big form is a bit skewed, if you can plot the floor plane on where the mech is standing you can make a square upwards and check with that, id say make a quick design sheet and a simple turn around and use that as a guide to fix if you so desire
many thanks to dawkward and coinhero for the nice writeups my dudes. i decided to strip the background and go for a simpler approach since i felt the perspective was outta my league at the moment. I gotta do some studies on cities and stuff to develop a visual library for this stuff to begin with. I spent tons of time just slushing around trying to find a background but nothing was coming to mind i was satisfied with so ill definitely be researching that more for future pieces.
Anyways, i liked how this turned out alot, and i think even the crop is a strong image, so if i do anymore work on it itll just be refining details and stuff. unless someone has an intriguing input ill certainly consider it. Im considering it a concept at this point over over an illustration, so i dont want to add any little narrative elements if it feels forced or distracting
yeah thats a fine portfolio piece right there! specially love how you used contrast so effectively to push to the face and torso.
it might not get you a mech drawing job but id see it helping for illustration and cover gigs, theres alot of work out there at your level just to help fund even more improvement! id recommend dropping by fiver and, but im obviously overstepping boundaries, anyway love the piece fedo
Dawkward: hey many thanks for the encouraging words my dude <3 I hope youre right, i just gotta keep truckin on
Did some last minute proportion tweaks to the torso as my eye caught it being a little skewed, and a few minor things elsewhere, you can see it if you flip back and forth with the previous jpeg how kinda sunk in it was, it doesnt bother me now and it feels solid.
Im hoping to start a tutorial soon on 3d, called the massive mech tutorial, its for 3d coat. i think itd be a great toolset to have, im still just figuring things out, theres so much to do... maybe some life drawing posts today if i like any!
Check out "FlippedNormals" on youtube for 3D stuff I think it's one of the better 3D channels, they don't do stuff in 3Dcoat but all the information they give transfers over all software pretty well. Also 3DCoat for mech design is a little weird for me I've always see it as a retopology and UV program, if you've never done 3D stuff before I'd recommend you play around in Blender 2.8 for a bit before spending money on tutorials and software.
Also I only now noticed the lights on the chest, its a really nice touch :D
not saying this is gospel but among the plethora of resources nowadays, if you clear a certain skill level i think you can start getting out there and making easy for people to find you!
i think the changes are good, id start another piece and let this one rest a bit! do more mechs or just do what you wanna do, there are times where pure enjoyment of exploring a subject matter can yield awesome improvement and motivation :)
