Where to start first?
#1
Hey guys I just want to know for the concept art industry whats the first thing I should be learning to practice, it gets really confusing, I've been drawing from this book Goblinoids and learning to draw shapes and proportions, but what is the first thing I should be learning to make it more curious to learn something else, is it painting, is it shapes, is it doodling I'm really confuse, it seems like I can go all over the place. Is it drawing without reference so I can draw imaginative or draw still life but then that not really designing much of my own. Been trying to find this in the forums.

(Edit) I forgot to mention coming back to digital, I've been trying to improve my traditional but now I want to comeback to digital, its been a long time and I really want to produce my concept art images but I have that feeling where its like, what do I do first.

Maybe painting some other images is the way to start I don't know.

I want to develop more of my own ideas.

Thank you

Hey, eru! If you are wanting to get into concept art, you should look at which field of you want to do. Do you want to design characters? Maybe environments or creatures? After you figure out just what it is you wanna do just start doing things that would help you get better at that. Characters for example, would benefit from human anatomy, clothing studies, etc. For designs themselves just look at the world and pay attention to how things are designed. Fashion, architecture, animals, whatever~ And then apply those things to your own ideas to make them better.

Any of the fundamentals, perspective, lighting, shadows, form, anatomy et6c they are all indirectly related. I took a quick look at your DA stuff and I'd say that some of your main issues are in anatomy, perspective and values Those 3 things may make a good place to start off with ;).

Actually what you start doesn't really matter as much as actually starting it. As Jonhop said, all of the fundamentals are linked and all of them are actually a necessity, (its not like you only need anatomy for character design etc.)
What really matters is actually starting practicing, gaining momentum and maintaining it. Keeping a steady pace, going on even if you feel like not going on. Thats kinda the hardest part. :)
That said, perspective and values might be something relatively easy to grasp at first..
