i got somethin you could try to practice rendering. So, say you're drawing those gators above, right? Draw a gator from your mind, and instead of trying to paint all the scales with brushes, take a photo of a gators skin and overlay it on your drawing and try to work from that. You'll be able to really analyze within the painting how to make convincing marks in comparison to the photo you layed in. It isn't "cheating," it's actually tough and it puts your skills to the test as far as value and lighting, give it a shot!
Your faces and figures study is quite impressive. I really like that sketch style on character designs. Would love to see more :D
Just wanted give something feedback about that crocodile painting. From what I see the value kinda flat so be sure to check value by turning black and white while you paint once in a while.

I think your heads have decent structure, they just have kinda unappealing proportions... make a folder of the people you think are the most attractive and analyze their nose to eye ratio, how long their jaw is to their lips etc. Maybe copy some classic portraits like Sargent who exaggerates the beauty of his subjects. Then apply from memory and you'll improve that. Make sure placement is just right, its a fucking nightmare to study but it is so worth it!
