This is a free for all class where the primary goal is the study of FORM.
This class is for anyone interested in studying form, from very beginner to skilled artisans.
The idea is to post weekly challenged for everyone to join in on, I will ask all of you to post and discuss the results here.
I will post the task results here myself also, will critique and give advice as much as I can.

This thread will contain all links, assignments and general class shenanigans for the next 8 or 9 weeks.

Registered vs not-Registered?
If you haven't registered for the class, you might not get direct critique from me on your work nor access to all the demo videos. This should not stop you from doing any assignments and please post your work in this thread, so we can all see it! You can use the donation option (see below) to get a guaranteed critique each week whether registered or not!

This thread is open to everyone to participate in and learn from, and hopefully will be useful to people long past the time it is actually live and running. Class structure

Demo videos
I will share prerecorded demo videos for most weeks. You will be able to watch these before getting started on your assignments. These will be hosted either as video files in my Google Drive folders or on My Youtube Channel

Assignments
Assignments will be posted in this thread and on the EDRocks site on a weekly basis, usually on a Friday or Saturday (UTC +12) depending on your timezone. You will generally get 1 week to do the work. There will be very clear and strict deadlines for submission of your work. Make sure you are subscribed to this thread!

You will have to post your work in this thread as well as submit the assignment using the submission form here
You will need to submit before the deadline if you want me to critique it. The submission form locks off automatically after each deadline passes, so make sure you don't leave it too late. Better to get it in, even if it's not 100% done.

Commercial and entertainment art, especially freelance, is heavily driven by deadlines. You must rise to the challenge! NO excuses. NO exceptions.   Ok, so if you have a truly genuine and serious issue preventing you from submitting you can talk to me about it. Having "Man flu" will not get you sympathy; losing a limb might, depending on which limb.

Critique
Critique will be split into two parts:

1. Individualised video critique
I will try and record your individual critique within a day of you submitting your assignments. For those registered I will first try and send you a direct link to your own short critique video. If that turns out to be too admin intensive, I will instead do a single recorded critique video for all assignments and make that available to everyone to view.

2. Group critique livestream
I will also host a weekly livestream session on My Sywork Channel
The livestream will be held mostly on the Monday/Tuesday (UTC+12) after the assignment deadline. Everyone is invited to come and view the live sessions and hang out and learn together. I have created a schedule in Sywork, they should notify by email beforehand if you follow my channel and have this setting enabled.

I will update the EDRocks website with all demos, assignments and resources so everything is neatly in one place.

Donations and Tailored Critique
This course is free for all and modeled on an equivalent $700 CGMA course.
You don't have to pay a cent, however, I will be accepting any donations if you want to give back a little.

Additional Bonus if you donate on any particular week, I will do a longer live critique on your work during the group critique livestream. You can use this as a way to get more help specifically where and when you feel you really need it.

Student Lounge
I created a permanent google hangout for the duration of the class (Click the heading). You can use it as a place to get to know each other, work on assignments at the same time, ask for help and advice, and be all happily introverted together safe behind your pixelated avatars. The only rules I have are to be respectful of each other, help each other out when you can, and most of all HAVE FUN. Art shouldn't be so damn serious all the time, you angsty so-and so's. :D

The hero- the arthur archetype. A noble warrior with connections to the otherworld.
The magical advisor- the Merlin archetype- an otherworldly aid to the hero.
The temptress- the Morgane archetype. also magical, but an antagonist to the hero.
The villain- The Mordred archetype. an evil flip of the hero.

We will discuss these character types as we move forward, and in the order presented above. the twist here to keep things interesting is that while we will be working off the basic Myth of Arthur, we will not be doing anything related to medieval europe. for anyone following along with this class, i encourage you not to use europe either. challenge yourself to translate this well established story into another culture.

I am assigning the following!

Thomas- you will be doing the arthur cycle in feudal Japan. I want emphasis on their mythology via the magical characters and a lot of research on their culture and costume to be reflected in the designs! how would a man becoming a king look at that time? what gods or deities can influence your design on merlin? how would excalibur look in this setting, and why? push this as far as you can!

Malan- In your entry post i saw some really awesome pen designs of faces. these had a lot of originality and character. I want you to use this approach for this class! these are a strongpoint for you, and will make your folio much more interesting if you expand on them. with that in mind im placing your characters in ancient Arabia. try to imagine Arthur as the adventurer who would become a king, Merlin as the archetype of the genie, and all the possibilities the middle east has for a sorceress like morgane. have fun with this and use that awesome style i saw!

Tadas- you get a tough one, but one i think you can do really great things with. your setting is Ancient Egypt. big emphasis on research here to look at the wildly different kinds of armor and style the ancient egyptians had from the medieval europeans. it is up to you how you interpret their really rich mythology and artistic sensibilities into this, so have fun, and do a lot of research!

some final notes!

NO FINISHED CHARACTERS ON WHITE. either Vignette and background in or set them on a dark or toned background. add cast shadows below them to ground them in tandem with your lightsource.

you have 2 weeks per character! the first week i expect to see sketches, research, and some work on a final design. after a long crit and some suggestions, you will have a second week to finish. when it is done, there will be a second crit, some paintover, and review before the next assignment is handed out. post your progress in this thread as you do it. keep this natural, progressive, and fun.

ANYONE FOLLOWING THE CLASS, FEEL FREE TO POST YOUR WORK HERE. if i see anything that really strikes the mark, i will present it on the stream and offer feedback.

It's been a great experience, almost 3 months of mentorship and more than 40 hours of class that I enjoyed a lot. I think there will be more teaching from me in the future , as crimson mentoring or something else time and situation will say. Now I need to take a break and find a job.

Thanks to my 3 brave souls Miles, Dominic and Klungart, and others who joined later like John, Judy or Martin, and all the people who were watching and supporting me week after week.

Also thanks to Dan and Cris, for the conversation we had before this, when I wasn't confidence enough to do it but they trusted me. And Angelique who was the first one to suggest "Isra you must do a mentorship" XD

Remember if you want to master perspective, you will still have to practice a lot and learn from more sources, but I hope this worked as a good start up.

Still have questions? Here are some commonly asked questions and answers (based on my experience).

1. How many thousands of dollars should I wire to the Crimson daggers bank accounts?

This whole program is FREE. It doesn't cost the students anything, although it takes a significant amount of time and preparation for the mentors so be nice and say thanks.

2. How do I actually join? Is there an application process? Do I have to send my resume to anyone?

There is no formal application process for the mentoring program, the whole process is pretty loose and is run through the boards. Every mentor does things a bit differently but generally speaking when a mentor decides to start a class they post in the willing to mentor section of the forums. If you're interested you post a reply to their thread after which it's up to the mentor to pick the students he or she will give direct feedback to.

3. But how does it actually work? Does the mentor hold my hand through the whole process? Is this an apprenticeship?

Like I said the program is pretty loose and it's up to you to make the most out of it. Generally speaking mentors have classes on live-stream and give out assignments which they critique a week or two later. Some mentors critique everyone or almost everyone who does the work, some mentors only critique a few students which they select at the beginning of class. Some mentors have pretty detailed lessons, some only do critiques. Everyone does things a bit differently, but the main idea is that you watch the classes to try and understand a concept/ a process or a way to approach a certain task, try to do the assigned work and then watch the critiques to see if you made some common mistakes and how you can avoid them in the future. The mentor is not someone who will hold your hand and check in with you every day. You have to do the work on your own and use the assignments and critiques as you see fit.

4. I missed the sign-up period for a mentor I want to follow, what should I do now? Should I just wait until they do the class again?

You can still follow a class on your own even if the class closed or you missed the sign-up, many of the mistakes the students make are mistakes you will probably make so you can still learn from the critiques.

Most of the classes are available on youtube. Below you will find each artist's youtube channel. Look for the stuff marked Mentoring or class, or something similar. You can also follow the class threads as they contain links and updated work.

Try to do the assignments to the best of your ability and post your work in the class thread. An important part of the whole program is to motivate you to work on stuff you'd probably never tackle alone and expand your way of thinking about art.

feel free to use any one of these or use any other painting as a ref. but please post them here in the thread so that we can compare and others can use too them if the like it :)

try to spend more time on construction & values/tones than rendering AND you can ignore those background details if its too much, you can just paint it with flat colors.

concentrate on overall proportion, likeness, colors, textures.
paint it as tight as possible, you have a whole week to render ;)

I've decided to turn this into an ongoing workshop, i'll continue to post assignments here and drop by as often as i humanly can. It has always been open to everyone and now my attention goes to everyone instead of a team of 5.
Again, i will not be here every day, but i hope you will learn good things while doing these.
