Adzerak's book o' sketches
#1
Okeeey. The old attachments doesn't seem to load anymore. Seems like it was a mistake to upload pictures here via my old sketchbook at http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthr...p?t=167650
The old pics are still visible over on there if someone is curious!

aaanyway:

I'm just here to grind some god damned art!

Righty. Let's not forget to post some studies and some traditionals. Among these are 2-3 hour still lives, 10 sec to 30 sec gesture and face studies. Also a Vermeer master study which also shows the process I use when I paint most of the time. The rest needs no introduction really, just a buncha stuff xD

Okeeeey. More gestures (tried doing some with one stroke, hard as hell, but felt kinda good) Some sketchbook scans and two speedpaints.

Here's a wip of a character a friend asked me to draw. Pretty challenging stuff for me, never really drawn wings before so it'll be awesome to try. And some water and skin training as well.
Feel free to leave a comment or, whatever ;P

Oooh, tons of hard work in here. I know I said this before in other peoples posts but watch out with those gestures. You should really be focusing on the pose instead of the exterior form body.

Here is an EXAMPLE
Remember to lay in the spine line first to capture the movement always. Study the example well, especially the one at the end; It will help tons in those quick gesture studies.

Also, don't forget to add in those construction lines when doin the faces, maybe even include the planes just so it looks more three dimensional.

Either way keep fightin you're churnin out loads of good work!

@Dennis: Ah, the good ol' Loomis mannikin! You're absolutely right. Even when I did those gestures at my friends house he told me that I wsn't going about it in the right way. I'm just so used to drawing the entire figure, with the details and so on. Forget what the gesture studies are actually for when I'm doing them. And I need my gesture studies xD

Here's some sketches, three of them, the one's who have feet, show pretty well why I need more practice in that area. They're both wonky as hell. Kinda works for the monster dude, but that's just a lame excuse really lol.

Damn, I suck at posting. At least art school has kicked in and I've done a bunch of things. Figured I should start posting regularly again. Quit being a damn ghost and all that.
Gonna drop a bunch of newer and older stuff in bundles xD

On my way doing about 1k gestures, trying to focus on the expression of the pose, rather than get caught up in detail. About 10-15 seconds spent per pose. (trying to do them in one stroke sometimes, hard as a golem's arse)
Oh, and here's some digital painting stuff as well. Enjoy

As I looked over my old posts I saw that I'd forgot Dennis' advice up there, considering the gestures. I seem to have a hard time approaching gestures in the correct way, but I'm getting better at it. Trying to simplify and focus on the rythm. Use one line or at least follow the motion from the spine through one of the legs and so forth. At least I feel that all the gestures are helping.
Here's a quick color study of a Jaime Jones piece. I wanted to capture the feel of the warms and cools like he did so well in that piece.
I should really focus on drawing, but it's nice to switch it up and do a few painting as well xD

The journey towards 1k fast gestures continue. Also the scanner wanted to accept my coal drawings. So here they are as well.
Really loved working with coal. Feels like it was something I needed to help me loosen up when I draw, instead of getting bogged down with details before I've even drawn the feet and so on xD

A new batch of coal drawings and a graphite goblin dude.
Very aware that the proportions are off on many on them. That's what I get when I try to be more gestural and loose. Also, my anatomical knowledge isn't that good (yet) heh.

Sup man. I like your pencil work, especially the monsters and brutes. I feel that your work is a little blocky and doesn't have a sense of natural flow. A good exercise you're doing is gesture exercises. Another thing you can do is when going digital work, after you finish your sketch, you open a new layer and simply redraw the image. With everything blocked out, you can just focus on making confident brush strokes and unifying the image.

@ Vatteh: Thanks for the crits there :) I have only made one traditional painting (the one in this post) and I'm not that confident when painting digitaly. That tip seems like a great exercise, since I often end up messing about too much with the strokes: "Gotta have form, but it's gotta be smooth too, not too blocky and messy...but..a sense of texture as well-SHIIIEEEE"

So here's my first attempt at traditional painting. Did a study of Anders Zorn's Knitting maid piece. Even tho I didn't get to spend so much time with it, I felt like it was a great practice over all. Gotta do more of these, building up painting confidence and knowledge and realising that I don't have to try to paint "fast" just because I can (so easy to do that digital compared to traditional)
Now I actually HAVE to think before placing a stroke ;P

Also, more gesture things from school. Drawing with a live model.

wow so many gestures Good job with all of that dude.

I like how you transitioned to doing tone, or at least that's what I think you are doing. If that is the case, then my suggestion would be to try start subordinating some of those small tones for the sake of the larger two tones black and white.

Here's a short paragraph with an example by andrew loomis http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2009/0...tones.html

Hi there Adzerak!, I notice that you struggling with drawing in Gesture

let me give you some tips
[Image: gesturetip02.png]

1. First dont draw the silhute, gesture is about drawing the emotions and felling of the subject,
not what the subject looks like.

try to draw without lifting the pen, doing this will eventually help you to see whats neccery in a gesture and whats not,
note ( learning this take time and i dont mean like a Day or two )

2. try to simplify as much as you can, you don't need to draw the whole subject to express its emotion or movement.

3. when you undertand how to draw in gesture, you can use it in anything basically

Note I have neither watch or read any real tutorial about drawing in Gesture, so all this info needs to be taking with a grain of salt,
every person learns differently, I hope this will help you in someway. so keep on Fighting man xD

Mr. Toodles: Nice tip right there! Gurney journey is a really kickass page, should check it out more often. Gurney knows what he's talking about xD

Sirobe: Oi there Mr Flat-Mate. Those are some sweet examples ya got there. Should definitely try to be more one stroky and loosen up even more, find the rythm and bla bla bla we talk a lot about this irl anyway xD

Anyhows, here more o' them traditional model gestures. Is bloody 'orrendous, innit?

Here's a a goblin for the Colony-game along with a kind of precision/motor skill study. After drawing a vertical line you draw a horizontal curve, line or wave. The trick is to draw that same pattern again eight times over without going too fast or too slow, and trying to stay withing the original line. This guy explains it better xD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk
